For some time I had entertained the idea of learning about beekeeping During Christmas 2007  I was prompted to explore the topic in greater detail after receiving the Beekeeping: Inspiration and Advice book as a present. This encouraged me to see if any courses were available locally and to my suprise one was to start at the end of January 2008 at RHS Harlow Carr Gardens in my home town of Harrogate. It was being run by the Harrogate & Ripon Beekeepers Association. I managed to get the last place on the course and by the end of April, when the theory part finished I couldn't wait to start my practical and see my nuc at the beginning of July so I scoured the internet, made a call, got some cash and nipped to Norwich for my first bees. By night they were settled in their new home in the garden, just outside the conservatory window and I was up at about six the following morning to let them out and this was the start of a very busy summer watching and learning. After a few days I thought What Now’ where do I go from here? I am trying to log what happens month by month on the home page and the archive it in the Diary as well as provide information about what I plan to do next. I hope you find it interesting and that you want to do your bit for honey bees and encourage others to keep bees in a sustainable way more suited to their future success. The information in these pages is aimed not just at those friends and neighbours who have volunteered to keep a hive or two in their gardens but at anyone who is concerned about the plight of the honey bee and would like to learn more about them and an alternative way of keeping them. To  me the way I have chosen seemed the best option, for both the bees and the beekeeper. As time goes by it should grow into a useful record and comparison between keeping bees in National Hives and Warré Hives.
